ESUP-Portail’s Thematic Day on Nextcloud Hub

This story starts in 2013 when the University of Lorraine began exploring on-premise solutions to store and share data, as many teachers and researchers were dissatisfied with the storage options offered by services like Google Drive and Dropbox (for security matters).

By the end of 2013, the digital department assigned one of their system administrators, Benjamin Seclier, with the project of installing such a tool on-premise. For software selection many French universities share the philosophy of the University of Lorraine where priority is given to open-source software. Only few open-source applications covered these functional needs at that time and ownCloud was chosen as the most suitable option at that time. The platform was implemented in 2014 and eventually replaced by Nextcloud Hub a few years later.

ESUP-Portail plays an interesting role when you look on the uptake of open source software within the field of higher education. This consortium brings together almost all French higher education institutions and supports the development and adoption of open-source solutions.

Its objectives are as follows:

• Promote local developments at the national level: Each French university is independent, particularly concerning its choice of applications to implement. However, we all face the same functional needs. ESUP is there to promote these applications through feedback, specific training, and more.

• Allow the connection of different universities for inter-institutional collaborative development of tools that meet their needs. For example, ESUP-Stage for internships management, ESUP-Pod for university’s YouTube, ESUP-SGC for multi-service card management, and more.

• Connect application service provider institutions with institutions using these services (in SaaS mode).

• Organize exchange moments between members of the French university community. Since 2006, ESUP organizes two annual conferences called “ESUP Days” that allow members to give feedback, recommend certain open-source solutions, advise against others, and more.

During ESUP-Days #34 in 2022, a roundtable discussion was held around the Nextcloud solution, which proved to be very successful. As a result, a thematic day dedicated to Nextcloud was added to the next ESUP-Days, which will take place on March 15, 2023, in Paris.

The event program will showcase speakers from the fields of education, business, and government, and will be sharing their use cases, problems, solutions, and account management strategies. While the event is focused on the French higher education community, it is also open to anyone working in education or government who is interested in Nextcloud Hub. Attendees will have the opportunity to learn, share, and network during this event.

The ESUP-Days thematic day on Nextcloud Hub promises to be an exciting event with insightful presentations and networking opportunities. This event is not limited to French universities, and is open to anyone interested in Nextcloud Hub from both the public and private sectors. We keep you informed of what’s going on in Nextcloud, wherever you are in the world!

To kick-off day two of the Nextcloud Conference, Maik Außendorf, member of the German Bundestag (parliament) gave an insightful and informative keynote speech about the digitalization of politics.

Maik talked about a number of policies and priorities at the German Parliament. For example, to catch up to many other countries, a common goal is to get faster internet in Germany. There is a plan for placing fiber optic cables under the ground to speed up internet connectivity. There are the usual challenges of working with cable providers and dealing with opposing groups in politics.

He also discussed sustainable digitization. The dilemma is that 2-4% of global CO2 emissions are coming from the IT industry and we need to reduce that impact. However, we also need to make use of digital innovations to create new business models. As mentioned in the announcement of Nextcloud Hub 3, its performance improvements will have a beneficial impact on the power requirements of the hundreds of thousands of Nextcloud instances in the world!

Regarding his views on open source software, he is a major advocate as he was co-founder and managing director of two IT consulting and software companies in the open source environment. He believes open source software is more efficient than proprietary software because it can be re-used by everyone and is sustainable. To learn more about Maik Außendorf, please visit his website.

Our second keynote speaker, Renata Ávila, CEO of Open Knowledge Foundation, gave a powerful and insightful speech on the interconnected issues of data privacy, human rights, and building a new digital future together.

In an excellent analogy of comparing an old, decrepit, overcrowded building to the monopolistic, dominant, big tech companies of today, she spreads her word on abandoning the narrative of a broken system we are taught and building a new one.

As a long time activist on digital topics which started from her early days as a human rights lawyer, she has strong opinions about protecting human rights for all in the digital sphere. She states that universality is a must in the digital world and we must push for higher levels of protection for everyone without exceptions.

Regarding her views on the open source community, she believes companies like Nextcloud are not an ‘alternative to’ big tech companies, but building blocks of a new piece of technology that’s more sustainable, private, and accepting. To learn more about Renata Ávila, follow her on Twitter.

After both keynote addresses, Franz Geiger, Tech Lead Software Engineer at Fairphone, discussed how electronic devices, namely smartphones, can be more ethical and sustainable. Fairphone is a smartphone company that cares about people and our planet. Everyone has a drawer somewhere full of old technological devices just sitting around, and him and his team are on a mission to change that where phones last longer, are more sustainable and ethically made, and are compatible use-wise to competitive models.

To gain a comprehensive understanding of the topics discussed prior, our Manager alliances, ecosystem & support, Daphne Muller led a panel discussion with Renata Ávila from Open Knowledge Foundation, Franz Geiger from Fairphone, and Gaël Duval from Murena.

Post lunch were a multitude of inspiring lightning talks, or 5 minute topics. Our speakers took the stage and presented their topics with enthusiasm and appealing slides. For example, Nimisha Vijay, UX Designer, talked about all the ways you can contribute to Nextcloud design. In her case, she started out by tuning into the weekly public design calls every Tuesday at 2pm.

In the afternoon of our conference, it is up to you whether or not you want to join one of the two workshops we hold. Both are to held to help you contribute and participate at a deeper level at the conference. Community Manager and UX Designer at Collabora, Pedro Silva, led a workshop about contributing to Nextcloud Office aka Collabora Online while Manager alliances, ecosystem & support, Daphne Muller and Julius Härtl, Office Team Lead at Nextcloud led a workshop on how to build a Nextcloud app. This was the perfect opportunity to get a hands on lesson by our experts!

We want to thank all our speakers and participants who joined us at this event and made it the success that it was.

• Lanyards: In light of sustainability purposes, we would ask attendees who have come before to bring their lanyard. If you haven’t been before, don’t worry, we will have badges for you to wear instead.
• T-shirts: If you also have an old Nextcloud t-shirt, please bring and wear it! If not, then there will be a few t-shirts available.
• Headphones: There will be free time and areas to work in, so be sure to bring your favorite set of ear buds or headphones if that’s your thing to get in the zone.
• Laptop: You will need to bring your own laptop if you want to use one, as we will not have ones for rent or borrowing.

Arrival:

To get to our venue bUm, you can take the U-Bahn, bike, car, scooter, or walk depending on where your accomodation is.

The closest U-Bahn stop is Schönleinstraße or U Görlitzer Bahnhof. For instance, you can take the U8 from Alexanderplatz to Schönleinstraße, or take the U1 or U3 from Warschauwer Strasse to Görlitzer Bahnhof. We recommend using a Maps app on your mobile device.

Upon your arrival, there is bike parking right in front of the building. Car parking is limited, so coming by public transportation is advised by the venue administration.

Admission:

Once you’ve entered the building, you will be greeted at our registration desk where you will check in, receive a badge (if you didn’t bring your lanyard), and be able to ask any questions you might have.

Hygiene & safety:

Regarding the current status of the COVID-19 pandemic, basic protective measures are in place in Berlin which all residents and visitors must follow.

Currently that means that FFP2 masks are mandatory for all persons riding public transportation in all of Germany. See more here.

On October 3^rd and 4^th for Contributer Week, Nextcloud will be sharing the space with others, therefore we must require you to wear a mask when walking around in the building, going to the cafeteria, or to the restrooms. For the rest of the Conference, Nextcloud recommends wearing face masks for safety reasons, but it’s not required. In addition, there is no requirement to do covid testing or providing proof of vaccination at any time

Sustainability:

Nextcloud is committed to sustainable, responsible practices and ensuring empathy in a (digital) society. As we host a major in-person event, we are aware of our social responsibility and environmental impact. Therefore, we will recycle all we can and try to avoid waste. As for your contribution, we ask you to bring your old lanyard and/or Nextloud t-shirt from a previous event to help our cause. We hope to make the #NextcloudConf a sustainable and friendly environment for all so we can continue these events in the future.

Food & Drinks:

Every day of the conference there will be access to free water, soft drinks, tea, and coffee.

In addition, a complimentary lunch is provided every day including vegetarian, vegan, lactose-free, and gluten-free options. By registering for the event, you already filled out your dietary preferences. On Saturday for the party, we will provide pizza.

Breakfast, snacks, and dinners (except Saturday night) are on the attendee.

Accessibility & Inclusion:

We want to make sure that #NextcloudConf is accessible to everyone who wants to participate.

The entire conference will be held in English, however there’s a good chance you will meet other people attending who speak your native language as we attract many international visitors.

The venue is completely barrier-free and wheelchair accessible.

As every year, we will be taking photos and videos throughout the event purely for our marketing purposes i.e. photos for our website, a compilation video of the event. If you don’t want your photo taken or don’t want to be in a video, please email events@nextcloud.com.
