Over the last years Nextcloud Talk has developed in a fantastic productivity tool, enabling teams across the globe to communicate and collaborate in chat rooms, video meetings and webinars. As part of Hub 4, This release introduces some key features for remote learning and use in enterprises, with breakout rooms and call recording. But many other improvements were made, so read on to find out what’s new!

Related resources of Files & Deck in Talk

Screencast of some of the features

Smart Picker

Last year Nextcloud Talk introduced nicely rendered links to other content, like tickets in issue trackers like github, gitlab or Zammad, pages on other websites like wikipedia to internal resources like tasks from Deck, Files or documentation pages from Collectives. With Hub 4, Talk introduces support for the Smart Picker to make it easier to find and insert content. For example, you can install the TheMovieDatabase and Giphy pickers, and debate your ideas about movie actors.

Example of Movies, series and people (by The Movie Database)

You can invite people for a party, letting ChatGPT generate a proposal for an invitation for you, then include a link to the location on open street map (where the users will be able to pan and zoom), and include a folder from Nextcloud where the participants can upload pictures to afterward. Be sure to also link to a documentation page from Collectives where everyone can put notes and tips. Finally, track the attendees using Tables. The Smart Picker helps you along the way, making all these things easier than ever before.

We also included AI image generators Dall-E (online!) and the on-premises stablediffusion and many more cool Smart Pickers. Check the Integrations section of the built in App store in Nextcloud, and hit that slash to try them out!

Example of using AI image generation (by OpenAI’s Dall-E 2 and StableDiffusion) in Nextcloud Talk

Last but not least, in Smart Picker news – we welcome you to build your own! Our team created a great Smart Picker tutorial, which you can find on our developer portal. Stay tuned for more news and blogs about that!

Desktop client

Many users have asked for: easier, better integration of Talk with the desktop. We worked on that, and with this release of Talk we make available a beta version of a desktop client! It is not finished yet, but we would love to get your feedback.

You can download the preview here.

Jump start conversations in breakout rooms

Breakout rooms are excellent for splitting up large meetings and in virtual learning environments. They allow you to distribute the members of a conversation over multiple smaller conversations, with or without video. The implementation in Talk allows administrators to manage this process, moving people between the rooms or moving between the rooms themselves. See some screenshots below.

Breakout rooms can be set up in different ways. You can choose who goes in what room, let Talk distribute the members evenly, or allow members to choose by themselves. After the rooms are created, the moderators can move between them, send messages, and move members between rooms.

Call recording

This release brings a recording option with a timer to video calls in Nextcloud Talk. Easily keep track of time in a call with the time watcher and never be out of the loop with session recording. After the call, simply send the recording in a chat and it will pop-up for all participants to see and view.

Nextcloud Talk reduced loading times, server load and notification delays by up to 99%.

More in Nextcloud Talk

๐ŸŽฎ Several administrator features to control permissions

๐Ÿ”Š Conversation ownership transfer

๐Ÿ“ฑ A dedicated iPad interface

๐Ÿ’ก AI component: Use the Smart Picker in Nextcloud Talk for Nextcloud Dictate (speech-to-text), Nextcloud Translate (with DeepL or on-prem), Dall-E (image generation), ChatGPT text generation and much more!

Nextcloud Office comes with powerful and visible apps like Talk, Groupware and Deck, but quietly working in the background is perhaps the lesser known Text app.

Nextcloud Text is perfect for note-taking, outlines and templates and it is also used in some other apps like Collectives for the text editing component. When you want to work in a simple and uncluttered environment, Text is your ideal choice. It offers a variety of rich formatting options without the more advanced functionalities of a complete office app like Writer in Nextcloud Office. The Text App saves its files as ‘markdown’ files which is very popular among writers, bloggers and techies alike.

Calling all developers!

Like any app, Text gets regular updates, bug fixing and development, and it is a great place to get started contributing to Nextcloud! Several Nextcloud developers, like Max and Jonas who developed the Collectives app, got their first contributions to Nextcloud in through Text. And if you get involved, you’ll certainly encounter them, triaging issues and fixing bugs!

Do you:

  • Already have experience programming?
  • Are familiar with tools y.js, vue.js and tiptap?
  • Curious to learn about new technologies?

Then you should contribute to the Text App!

The tools being used (y.js, vue.js, tiptap) are all built by people who know their craft, have looked into the problems in depth, and found innovative solutions which makes Text a great place to learn how to build up code for those with some experience in programming.

About y.js

y.js was implemented to solve the problem of merging conflicts while collaborative editing. Dealing with these conflicts is a very interesting challenge that people have studied for decades. The requirement for combining the changes of different people was to have a certain order: the changes of person A would be merged first, then the changes of person B, etc., even if the changes of person A and B were made at the same time. The order has to be respected. This means the submission of the changes was often out of order, changes had to be resubmitted, and the user experience was not smooth. y.js was invented between 2016 and 2020 as part of a research project, and it became the first widely used implementation of a CRDT (conflict-free replicated data types) algorithm for shared editing. CRDTs allow collaborating without worrying about the resolution of conflicts. This means we can allow accepting the changes even if they arrive in different orders. The implementation of y.js in Text resulted in great improvements for the performance and user experience.

Getting started

In the Text repository, thereโ€™s a very accessible entry-point for new contributors: all issues are triaged, feedback on pull requests is provided fast, and the team is continuously investing in reducing technical debt.

To get started, a variety of ‘good first issues’ are ready for you! Some of the issues just require a one line change in the code and are a very accessible starting point to get some confidence, while other issues are detailed and provide a great chance to learn how the code is structured. Overall, all issues contain elaborate explanations and help is available if you get stuck!

With that, letโ€™s get going! ๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ’ป๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ’ป

EU Governments bet on Nextcloud to replace SharePoint https://staging.nextcloud.com/blog/eu-governments-bet-on-nextcloud-to-replace-sharepoint/ Wed, 01 Mar 2023 08:01:00 +0000 https://nextcloud.com/?p=101281 In collaboration with European government organizations, Nextcloud announces a full SharePoint replacement.

Privacy and compliance conscious government organizations won’t be forced in the cloud, settle on on-premises solution that protects independence.

Proprietary SaaS plaforms like Sharepoint and MS 365 have become major cash cows, and on-premises solutions get discontinued across the tech sector to force customers into vendor-locked clouds. Organizations dealing with critical or sensitive data respond by looking to maintain their strategic autonomy by deploying on premises solutions. In collaboration with a number of European government organizations, the market leader in the open source, on-premises collaboration space today announces the expansion of it’s offering to provide a full SharePoint replacement, complete with migration services. Showing the strong trend towards digital sovereignty, the announcement comes shortly after the highest EU Data Protection authority, the EDPS, announced they deploy and recommend Nextcloud.

We believe that development based on real world requirements and demand, rather than a strategy of forcing customers into a vendor lock-in, results in better products. Demand for an open, on-premises structured data platform as part of Nextcloud has been huge, and several customers have already signed up to deploy our technology.

Frank Karlitschek, CEO and founder of Nextcloud GmbH

The imminent end of SharePoint Server support has created a huge demand for solutions that offer similar functionality without compromising user control over data and meta data. The risks around data sovereignty and vendor lock-in is particularly pronounced for government agencies, many of which for reasons of autonomy, cost and compliance, tend to rely on on-premises tools for collaboration and document management.

A number of customers from the public sector has worked with Nextcloud to integrate a structured data management application into Nextcloud Hub. German state Schleswig-Holstein already announced their intention to replace SharePoint with Nextcloud in 2020 and since then several government organizations have already committed to the platform. Even more are providing feedback and information on their requirements with an eye to adopting Nextcloud as their on-premises SharePoint replacement.

Nextcloud’s initiative to offer a digitally sovereign, open-source alternative to Microsoft Sharepoint is to be welcomed. That’s why we work together with Nextcloud to optimize Nextcloud Tables.

Ralf Sutorius, Leitender IT-Architekt, Stadt Kรถln

Nextcloud Hub is well established as a collaboration platform, providing easy document collaboration and sharing for teams and work groups, as well as integrated knowledge management. The introduction of Tables rounds the platform out with management of structured data. It allows customers to build, manage and work with data structures, putting together easy ‘apps’ and connecting them to various other components in Nextcloud for automation.

Users will be able to create a table to track any other type of data that is relevant to their organization, such as expenses, projects or sales leads. The flexibility of Tables allows users to tailor the table to their specific needs.

The first release of Tables is available now on the Nextcloud app store.

Administrator settings

Simplify your data migration from Google and OneDrive to Nextcloud Hub with the help of our user-friendly migration tools. However, as an administrator, you’ll need to follow some steps to make sure the authentication request from Google and Microsoft servers is accepted. Our administrator settings in Nextcloud Hub guides you through this process and we tried to make it as easy as possible. Unfortunately these platforms are not very kind to distributed infrastructure and we can not do this for you.
